James Cassidy, MBChB, MD, MSc, FRCP

Dr. James CassidyDr. James Cassidy is a Professor of Oncology and heads the Medical Oncology Department and the Division of Cancer Sciences & Molecular Pathology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He runs a variety of laboratory programs and clinical services aimed at covering all modalities and types of malignancy.

In the laboratory, Dr. Cassidy heads the Centre for Oncology and Applied Pharmacology (COAP) and has his own Cancer Research UK (CRUK) lab based program exploring methods for gene and drug delivery. He also heads the Glasgow Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) which is focused on Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) quality assured assessments of molecular markers, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of novel agents at the clinical/lab translational interface. This extends into more general markers of prognosis and prediction of response.

On the clinical side, Dr. Cassidy runs a service for colorectal cancer patients and has a major commitment to early phase clinical studies of innovative therapies. He also heads the clinical trials CACTUS, WoSCRN and is director of the CRUK Beatson Cancer Trials unit. These all serve the same ultimate goal of running a portfolio of clinical studies covering all modalities and all types of malignancy. He has been Chief investigator of several large scale RCTs in colorectal cancer over the last decade.

Dr. Cassidy received his MB, ChB from Glasgow University, where he received 19 certificates of merit, the William Hunter Medal, and the Ure Prize. He received his MRCP (UK) in 1985, his MSc Clinical Pharmacology from Glasgow University in 1988, his MD from Glasgow University in 1991, his FRCP (Glasgow) in 1994 and FRCP (Edinburgh) in 1996.

Dr. Cassidy is a member of the Editorial board of Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology, Expert Reviews of Anticancer Therapy, European Journal of Cancer, Investigational New Drugs (The Journal of New Anticancer Agents) and the British Journal of Cancer and clinical subject editor of BJC since July 2003. He regularly reviews manuscripts for Thorax and Annals of Oncology as well as grant applications to the MRC, Cancer Research UK, EACR, AICR and various smaller cancer charities. He has edited several reference books, written nine book chapters, and published close to 200 papers and over 200 abstracts.
